City fined $90K for workplace safety problems

The City of Winnipeg has been handed its largest workplace safety fine ever.
The city has been fined $90,000 for failing to protect contract workers from asbestos at the Transcona Pool.
In 1999, the city hired a private company to remove ceiling tiles above the pool, but it failed to inform workers of the asbestos behind the tiles.
Asbestos can be extremely dangerous if fibres are inhaled into the lungs.
