Tim Minchin joins Jian to discuss his Broadway-conquering musical, Matilda, and his irreverent musical style. His adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved book was nominated for a Tony Award in the best score category last year.
The Australian-born U.K. artist explains why he doesn't consider himself a comedian, despite his often comedic lyrics, and why he's being more selectively provocative as his audience grows.
"I do care about how people feel. I want people to feel good and affirmed by my shows," he tells Jian.
"You gotta make sure you're punching up, is the phrase I use."
Tim Minchin performs his hits Prejudice and You Grew on Me. Please note: both songs contain cursing.
