Angela Mathieson is the new president and CEO of CentreVenture, downtown Winnipeg’s development agency.
She takes over from Ross McGowan who retired earlier this month.
“Angela Mathieson has long been respected in Winnipeg for her work in urban and economic development and I am very pleased she will lead CentreVenture into the next generation of partnerships and opportunities to continue the revitalization of our city’s downtown,” Mayor Brian Bowman stated in a news release.
“We are pleased to welcome Angela, who was selected after a comprehensive search process conducted by a committee of the board,” Curt Vossen, CentreVenture’s board chair added.
“Angela is familiar with the business and achievements of CentreVenture and we are confident that with her background and experience she will be able to lead CentreVenture as we continue to create a strong and vibrant downtown. We look forward to working with her.”
CentreVenture’s mandate is to stimulate downtown revitalization by creating an environment for private sector businesses and government to work together and to promote the downtown to investors, businesses and residents.
The agency has, in recent years, bought up property in the downtown, including St. Regis Hotel and Carlton Inn, two businesses that had been magnets for public displays of intoxication, gambling and panhandling.
It has since closed down the St. Regis beer vendor and VLTs and is continuing to operate it as a long-stay hotel. The Carlton has been demolished and a new hotel complex is currently in the planning process.
Other projects include:
- Working on a plan to redevelop the long-shuttered James Avenue pumping station property.
- Construction of the 20-storey, 154-room hotel complex across from the MTS Centre.
- Creation of the SHED (sports, hospitality and entertainment district) in downtown.
