B.C. Coroners Service urges pedestrians and drivers to be cautious during dark and stormy weather
Two pedestrians were killed in separate vehicle collisions in Richmond and Coquitlam, B.C., Monday night, according to the RCMP.
In Richmond, a 75-year-old woman was crossing the road at Westminster Highway, west of Gilbert Rd. at about 10 p.m. PT.
She was hit by an Audi SUV heading eastbound, according to RCMP.
Police are investigating and believe the pouring rain at the time of the incident may have been a factor. The location where the woman tried to cross the road may have also contributed to the collision, according to RCMP.
The driver stayed on the scene after the accident.
Second incident in Coquitlam
Meanwhile, in Coquitlam, a multi-vehicle crash killed a pedestrian just before 10 p.m. last night, near the intersection of Como Lake Avenue and Robinson Street.
Coquitlam RCMP are investigating and no other details have been released
These deaths come after the B.C. Coroners Service issued a public safety bulletin last week, warning pedestrians and motorists to take extra caution in the dark, stormy conditions.
Five pedestrians, all seniors, had been killed in 11 days across B.C., prompting the warning.
Seniors over 70 years old are at more than double the risk of dying in a pedestrian incident, according to a recent review by the B.C. Coroners Service of 142 deaths between 2010 and 2012.
