Archery is making a comeback on P.E.I. and it’s drawing people from all walks of life.
For the first time, an archery team from the province will go to the Canada Winter Games and it's because of the efforts of Duncan Crawford.
Crawford coaches the team, built the Cass’s Creek Archery Club training facility, formed a provincial archery association and has helped get thousands of dollars of equipment sent to six Island schools.
“I know what an important sport it has been to me and the opportunities it's given me in life, and I wanted to pass that back,” he said.
Crawford competed in archery at two Canada Winter Games.
Anton Ong is one of Crawford’s students. When he hit the target for the first time, he was hooked.
“It's that sense of accomplishment, where all that training and hour after hour you finally hit that bull's-eye, you feel really good about yourself,” he said.
Kristin Arsenault says people at her school are very curious about her love of the sport.
"They kinda say that's cool actually. They just say not a lot of people do that, and that's really neat," said Arsenault.
Crawford says archery is on the rise across the country, thanks to some very popular movies, such as The Hunger Games series of movies.
"Every teen in North America has seen Katniss Everdeen or Brave or any number of those characters and immediately it's, 'I want to try archery.' It's been great, and it's been really good timing," said Crawford.
Kathy Ryan joined the club two months and she’s learned more than just how to shoot.
“It’s humbling. You have to check your ego by the door and I think that’s a really good experience for all of us,” she said.
The club is open for anyone to try on Saturday afternoons.
The Canada Winter Games will be held in B.C. from Feb. 13 to March 1.
