8 retro candies you wish you had right now

Regina candy expert talks about candy and nostaligia

Wondering about whatever happened to your favourite candy treats from your childhood? Some of them have stood the taste of time, while others have melted away. A few though, are being resurrected due to popular demand.
"From what I hear in the store is, it just brings back childhood memories," Shelley Patterson, owner of Dessart Sweets told Blue Sky host Garth Materie on a special Halloween Candy Line phone-in.
Patterson searches far and wide for those hard-to-find candy delights. She locates some of them in the U.S. and others in the United Kingdom.
Treats such as Cherry Blossom and Big Turk are uniquely Canadian. There's also a toffee bar that many people remember.
"Mackintosh's toffee we still have that and that's in a bar store. Lots of people remember that especially at Christmas time," Patterson explained.
Other items she gets lots of questions about are Cracker Jacks (they still have them), sponge toffee (it's a seasonal item in the fall), and Astro Pops.
Patterson says they get stories about them all the time and they usually involve losing a tooth while eating them.

Here's a list of her most popular requests:
  1. The Cuban Lunch is discontinued - Probably one of our most requested items, says Patterson.
  2. Mackintosh's Toffee bar - We have it but it no longer comes in a box.
  3. Lucky Elephant Popcorn - They still make it and we carry it. They no longer have prizes in the box, just stickers.
  4. Pop Rocks - We carry them and have about 7 flavours of them.
  5. Popeye Candy Sticks - They no longer have a red tip on them.
  6. Wig Wags - Another popular request. They don't make them anymore but we do carry a similar bar called Curly Wurly.
  7. Gold Mine Gum - still available
  8. Bonkers - They don't make them anymore but I heard they will be soon.
