Seat is up for grabs after current councillor Cory Thomas decided not to re-offer
Voters in Prince Edward Island head to the polls next Monday in municipal elections and with six candidates running in Summerside’s Ward 8, it’s the most crowded race in the province.
Chris Beauvais is one of six people running for council in the ward and cast his ballot at an advance poll Monday in Summerside.
"I think it's great to see for the community that there's lot of interest,” he said. “For all six of us, all six candidates, we bring a distinct different skill set and different skills to the table and it gives a vast array for residents to look at.”
The 1,200 voters in the ward have to choose between Beauvais,Tyler DesRoches, George Lyle, Glenn MacKay, Wayne Wright and Mike Sullivan. Current councillor Cory Thomas has decided not to re-offer.
Ward 8 resident David Gallant says his doorbell has been ringing.
"Every one of them's been here,” he said. “They're all giving their opinions. It's finally like people understanding they want change and I think they understand that's the way they're going to get change by more people getting involved."
Several Ward 8 candidates told CBC News they want greater financial accountability and transparency at city hall.
Candidate Mike Sullivan is a retired chartered accountant.
"I am a taxpayer here and we have a considerable debt,” he said. “It may very well be manageable, but I'd like to see that there's a plan as to how it's managed and if there's going to be more debt, then how do we deal with that debt."
The polls open at 9 a.m. on Monday, November 3.
