A loss on the last day of the regular season dropped the Blue Jays from second to third place in the AL East.
The Jays had been tied with the New York Yankees for second place in the division prior to Sunday's games.
But the Jays lost 1-0 to the Baltimore Orioles and the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 9-5 on Sunday afternoon. That series of events meant that the Jays (83-79) finished the season in third place, while the Yankees (84-78) took home the division's consolation prize.
Both the Yankees and the Jays will be absent from the post-season this year.
The Blue Jays head into the off-season with a 21-year post-season absence, the longest active drought in the major leagues now that the Kansas City Royals are playoff bound.
Before this year, the Royals had not made the playoffs since 1985, the same year the Jays made the playoffs for the first time and Kansas City won the World Series.
