A little-known lab at Ontario's liquor control board is responsible for making sure alcoholic beverages are safe before they hit the shelves.
Scientists in white lab coats test some 22,000 wines, liquors and other drinks per year, said LCBO executive vice-president George Soleas.
"We chemically test the products to make sure that the products … are clean of any contaminants such as pesticides or heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, some of the other metals that you don't want to find in your consumables," said Soleas.
