Stewart held a news conference Friday to announce he will be seeking re-election one last time. He has served as mayor since November 1985. If elected for another four years, he said he would retire at the end of his term and spend more time with his family.
Stewart noted he has never missed a day's work since taking office. He said if elected he would ask council to vote to reduce electricity rates.
One of Canada's longest-serving mayors, Stewart served as president of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities in 2009-2010.
Summerside businessman Bill Martin is also running for mayor.
