The Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority says it's not going to start picking up compost at the curb because it's too expensive.
Cam Wright, the manager of waste diversion, said it would cost millions of dollars to start such a program, and $1.5 million a year just to run it.
According to the authority about 30 per cent of what's currently sent to the landfill is food waste.
Wright said adding a weekly compost pick-up would mean cutting back regular garbage pickup to a bi-weekly schedule.
Instead, the authority is looking into ways of improving service by starting a weekly recycling collection program. Currently it runs a bi-weekly pickup.

"When we put our next tender on the street for recycling, we need to include a weekly option in there to see what the cost might come in at," said Wright.
Windsor`s recycling contract with GFL Environmental is up in two years.
