The Pride Calgary Parade planned this Sunday is expecting to see a large contingent of athletes.

Eight Canadian Olympians are planning to march along with Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish, an advocate for gay and lesbian rights. For the first time ever they will be joined by members of the Calgary Flames.

“The participation of professional athletes in the Calgary pride parade in such numbers is a milestone. It really challenges that stereotype, not only of Calgary but of Alberta,” said Kristopher Wells, director of the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies at the University of Alberta.

With that in mind, CBC Calgary asked what it’s like to be out in the field. We were joined by Olympic athlete John Fennell and college baseball player Chandler Whitney, who participated in a panel discussion co-hosted by Egale Canada Human Rights Trust called Tackling Homophobia in Sports Friday night.
