Quake rattles Peace Country

A moderate earthquake that hit the Peace Region Friday night knocked pictures off walls and rattled dishes.
But the RCMP says no injuries and no structural damage have been reported.
The quake, which had a magnitude of 5.4, occurred about 8:20 p.m. It was centred about 40 km. northeast of Dawson Creek, B.C., but was felt as far away as Whitecourt, 175 km. northwest of Edmonton.
Ruth Simms was in Sexsmith when the quake hit.
"I was just sitting there and it felt as though a big truck had hit the side of the house and it was kind of moving and everything," she says. "I thought, that feels like an earthquake, but in northern Alberta?"
Cst. Jennifer Bolton of the Grande Prairie RCMP says she had a similar thought when she felt her house shake.
"The bookshelves and everything shook on the wall but nothing fell off any shelves or anything," she says.
Bolton says police fielded a number of calls from concerned residents wanting to know if it was an earthquake. She says they were referred to the Pacific Geo-Sciences Centre and Natural Resources Canada.
It says the quake was the largest to shake the region since 1986, when a tremor measuring 5.5 hit an area northeast of Prince George, B.C.
