Just over a week after he was gunned down on duty, an RCMP officer was laid to rest by old friends and family in his hometown Saturday.

Const. Dennis Strongquill was killed Dec. 21 after trying to stop a truck with Alberta licence plates during a routine vehicle check.

A man and woman are being held on charges of first-degree murder. They're scheduled to appear in a Brandon, Man. court on Jan. 7. A third suspect was killed in a shootout with police after a 14-hour chase through rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Hundreds of mourners gathered Saturday for what the mayor called one of the largest funerals ever held in Barrows, about 450 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

The service, which lasted two hours, included native drummers and traditional church hymns.

Strongquill, 52, was remembered as a loving father, good neighbour and devoted police officer. He spent 20 years in the RCMP. His last assignment was as a member of a new, all-native detachment on the Waywayseecapo First Nation.

On Thursday, police officers from across Canada held a memorial service in Powerview, Man. The service was a chance for fellow officers to pay their final respects.
