Len Simms, CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing, will retire from his position at the end of August.

He was appointed to the position in 2005 by former premier Danny Williams.

He says a lot of work has been done during his tenure to improve housing conditions in the province.

But issues such as mental health and homelessness still remain a challenge.

"One of the biggest challenges I think we (Newfoundland and Labrador Housing) and society has is around mental health and people with complex needs," said Simms. "That's an area where we need to do a lot more, more than a lot of the things we've already done."

Simms earned an annual salary of $130,000. His replacement has not been announced yet.

Simms has also served as a PC leader, MHA, cabinet minister and Speaker of the House of Assembly.
