Fredericton West-Hanwell is an urban and rural riding, which includes portions of 15 different municipalities and local service districts in the Fredericton area. It also includes the Kingsclear First Nation.
The riding contains a section of Fredericton on the south side of the St. John River. The riding’s boundaries in Fredericton are, on the west the centre line of Smythe Street from the entrance to Odell Park to Prospect Street and west of the centre line of Hanwell Road from Prospect Street to the intersection of Hanwell Road and Serenity Lane, including the Hanwell Mini Home Park.
The riding also includes local service districts and rural communities, such as Hanwell and Lower and Upper Kingsclear.
The majority of people living in the riding reside in Fredericton. The capital city’s economy is driven largely by the public service and the two public universities that are located in the capital city. But the city is also home to growing technology industry and has seen companies, such as Radian6 and Q1 Labs, sold for hundreds of millions of dollars.
The riding also includes the Kings Landing Historical Settlement, which is a popular tourist destination.

Political history
Fredericton West-Hanwell is a new riding that was created for the 2014 election and includes portions of the former ridings of York and Fredericton-Silverwood.
Progressive Conservative Brian Macdonald defeated Liberal Rick Miles in Fredericton-Silverwood. Miles was a first-term MLA and served part of that term as the minister of environment. Miles, who was a political unknown in 2006, defeated Progressive Conservative Brad Green. Green was later appointed a judge on the Court of Queen’s Bench and then was appointed to the Court of Appeal.
The part of the riding that includes the riding of York has been voting for the Progressive Conservatives in recent elections.
Progressive Conservative Carl Urquhart was elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.
Urquhart defeated Liberal Trent Jewett in 2003. Jewett was running for the Liberals and the incumbent Liberal MLA Scott Targett decided not to re-offer.
NDP Leader Dominic Cardy will be running in Fredericton West-Hanwell in 2014. The NDP placed in third positions in both York and Fredericton-Silverwood in 2010.
