New name expected as early as September
A change is underway in Regina so "Redmen" will no longer be the nickname of Balfour Collegiate's sports teams.
It's expected a new team name will be chosen in September, a spokesman with Regina Public Schools confirmed Monday.
Originally, Balfour took on the name Redmen to signify its team colours. However, it also adopted an Indian head logo for a while.
Today, some people consider the name Redmen racially insensitive, regardless of the origins.
In March, the school board said an elders advisory council was examining the Balfour team name. Now it appears the decision to drop Redmen has been made.
Also earlier this year, Saskatoon's Bedford Road high school stopped using Redmen as its team name. They're now the Redhawks.
The debate over which names are or aren't inappropriate has also involved professional sports teams in the United States.
In the NFL, the Washington Redskins have been under increased pressure lately to change their name. Meanwhile, there are growing calls for the Cleveland Indians baseball team to drop their "Chief Wahoo" logo.
