The shelves at the Southern Kings and Queens Food Bank in Montague are looking bare these days as recent food drives have been much less successful than in the past.

A Tim Hortons food drive usually brings in thousands of pounds of food for the food bank, which is enough to get it through the summer. Unfortunately, the weather was poor for the recent food drive.

"We got exactly 236 pounds of food and $110," said Marlene Power with the food bank. "It was a disappointment."

Other food drive efforts have struggled. A food drive at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre only brought in 245 pounds of food and $12.50.

With the food bank giving out in excess of 5,500 pounds of food a month to support roughly 160 families, it's clear the numbers just aren't adding up at the moment.

Power says the food bank has had to purchase a lot of food lately — it recently spent $1,800 on cereal alone.

On the plus side, the food bank received 100 dozen eggs this morning from a Buddhist monastery which is located across from the food bank.

The food bank is going to hold its own food drive to collect donations. On the first Saturday in August, it is going to have a bbq where it will ask for donations and talk to people about the work it does.
