Retired South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu arrived in Fort McMurray Thursday for a conference on aboriginal treaties and the oilsands.

Tutu, a Nobel laureate, has been critical of the oilsands and pipelines. While he is in Fort McMurray, he is scheduled to do a flyover of the region and deliver a keynote speech on Saturday.

Tutu didn’t take any questions from reporters at the airport and was quickly escorted into a waiting SUV.

The conference is sponsored by the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation as well as Toronto law firm Olthuis Kleer Townsend.

Former Ontario premier and former federal Liberal MP Bob Rae is a partner in the firm.

Rae, former NWT premier Stephen Kakfwi, former Syncrude president James Carter and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam are also scheduled to speak at the conference.
