Kitchener to install new community flagpole downtown

After much public pressure, Kitchener city council has decided to designate two flag poles as "community flagpoles."
A new flagpole will be installed at Speaker's Corner at the corner of King and Benton streets. A second, pre-existing flag pole at the corner of Duke and Young streets will also become a community flagpole.
This comes after a controversial decision by the city to not fly a rainbow flag at city hall during the Sochi Olympics.
According to a news release issued by the City of Kitchener, community interest groups can ask to have a flag flown on one of the new flagpoles to:
  • honour national or independence days important to the residents of Kitchener;
  • support fundraising drives important to the residents of Kitchener;
  • celebrate multicultural and civic organizations or events important to the residents Kitchener.
However, no political flags or any that could reflect poorly on the city's public image will be flown.
Installing the new flagpole at Speaker's Corner will cost about $2,500.
