Steel modular truss could not be fully installed over Victoria Day weekend
People driving over the Champlain Bridge may be surprised to see the superbeam still in place.
Officials with Jacques-Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated said high winds made it impossible to finish the work under the bridge, an essential step in removing the superbeam.
Taking it down is the last step of an operation to provide additional support to the bridge after a crack in the centre of a midspan beam was discovered last November.
Jean-Vincent Lacroix of JCCBI said the work will hopefully be completed next weekend, barring any other uncooperative weather conditions.
“Next weekend, May 24 and 25, we have a blitz. We have also a blitz for the first weekend of June and also for June 14 and 15,” he said.
All three lanes in both directions of the Champlain Bridge will be open for morning rush hour on Tuesday.
