The Kamloops School District has decided not to ban a novel some parents have called vulgar and pornographic, but one concerned father says the fight isn't over.

Two months ago when the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower was assigned to his son's grade 10 class, Dean Audet objected that the book was pornographic.

A committee made up of teachers, a parent and librarians recently reviewed the novel and gave it a passing grade.

But Audet says he isn't backing down and is now considering legal action.

"Last time I checked it is illegal to distribute pornography to minors," said Audet, who objects to sections that he says include young people having sex, graphic instructions on how to masturbate and child molestation.

"If the school board thinks that this is over, they had better stock up on Tylenol because there are a lot of parents who are going to be creating some headaches for them," he told CBC News.

Audet says many parents in Kamloops share his feeling about the book and they are not going away quietly.

"They really aren't interested in what the parents have to say. They aren't interested in what the students have to say about this particular topic. Their attitude is, 'Run along, we have a job to do and we really don't care what you think'," he said.

The novel by American Stephen Chbosky is a coming-of-age tale about an introverted teenager who has trouble controlling his emotions as he struggles to fit in. Since it was first published by MTV in 1999, the New York Times bestseller has frequently been compared to J.D. Salinger's cult classic The Catcher in the Rye.
