Coming to Montreal from another part of the world can be an isolating experience for immigrant women.
Femmes du Monde is a women-only centre in Côte-des-Neiges that helps women integrate into the community.
Debra Fogel is a founder of the women’s centre.
She says Femmes du Monde is a place where women can make friends, take a language class and find information about issues that affect them, such as housing.
Fogel says the centre has changed as the neighbourhood has changed.
“Society is fluid,” said Fogel.
“As the waves of immigration change, so do we.”

About the project
Côte-des-Neiges Chronicles(external link) is a collaboration between CBC Montreal and the Diploma Program of the Department of Journalism at Concordia University. Students from an online journalism course were asked to report on Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. They were also asked to push their storytelling skills through the use of photos, video and information graphics. The result is a wide-ranging look at the history of Côte-des-Neiges, its key attractions, and the individuals and communities that make up one of Montreal’s more diverse neighborhoods.
