The RCMP and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary have seized more than 50 pounds — or 22 kilograms — of Canadian currency estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Police said they executed search warrants and made the seizure Thursday night in Benoit's Cove on Newfoundland's west coast.

In addition to the money, police seized approximately 2.2 kilograms of marijuana.

The drugs were found in a garage while the money was taken from a vehicle in the community. The vehicle had an Ontario licence plate.

The investigation has been ongoing since 2012 by the Corner Brook RNC and the RCMP Serious and Organized Crime Unit in Cornwall, Ontario.

Four men were arrested on numerous charges, including conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, money laundering and possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.

Two men from Benoit's Cove were charged and released on a recognizance on Thursday. The two Ontario men are scheduled for a bail hearing Friday in Corner Brook provincial court.
