A plan to capture and kill loose dogs on the Mikisew Cree First Nation in northern Alberta has been changed after the Fort McMurray SPCA offered to help.

The controversial idea first came to light after the First Nation put an ad on Facebook looking for a dogcatcher.

The ad stated that any of the 40 loose dogs not tied up by Friday in Fort Chipewyan would be captured and killed.

The ad was removed after it raised the ire of animal rescue groups.

The First Nation is still looking for a dogcatcher. But, instead of culling the animals, a kennel will be built where the dogs will be fed and given hay to sleep on

People who want to adopt the dogs will be given help with getting them spayed or neutered.

The First Nation was concerned that the dogs could be a threat to safety of small children in the community.
