Sudbury Daystarter: Dara Howell wins gold in slopestyle ski

- Dara Howell of Huntsville won the gold medal and Kim Lamarre took bronze in the women's ski slopestyle event at the Winter Olympics in Sochi on Tuesday. WATCH
- The Brad Jacobs rink from Sault Ste Marie has suffered a second straight loss at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, falling to Sweden this morning by a score of 7 to 6.
- Sudbury cross-country skier Devon Kershaw failed to qualify for the Men's Individual Free Sprint in Sochi. He placed 56th. Click here for results.
- The Canadian women's hockey team, with Sudbury's Rebecca Johnston, beat Finland 3-0 yesterday. The team is now preparing for a big match up with the U.S. tomorrow at 7:30 a.m.
- After capturing silver in the team competition, Meaghan Duhamel and Eric Radford start their push for an individual medal in pairs figure skating. The short program goes at 10 a.m.
INVESTIGATION: OPP say a murder investigation in Estaire dating back to October continues. But so far, no charges have been laid, and police have not named a suspect in the case. Last year, Sherri-Lynn McEwan was found seriously injured in her home in Estaire - she later died of those injuries. Sergeant Carolle Dionne says a tip line set up to gather information on the case is still taking calls.
BLASTING: Some people in Timmins may hear or feel blasting starting today. Construction is underway on the open pit at the site of the old Hollinger mine. Porculine Gold Mines says the first blasting for the project is expected to start later this morning and then continue on a regular basis through construction of the pit.
POLITICS: No provincial election has yet been called in this province, but another person has announced their intentions to seek nomination for the Liberal party in Sudbury. Elise Idnani made the announcement yesterday.
TRAFFIC CHANGE: If you see a flashing overhead sign on Lasalle Boulevard, you're asked to slow down and be aware of a funeral procession. The City of Sudbury has partnered with the Cooperative Funeral Home to install the overhead signs and flashing amber beacons at St. Jerome Street across from the Taxation Centre. The city says the beacons can be activated during peak traffic hours—9 a.m. and 3 p.m—to alert drivers to slow down.

Highway 652 near Cochrane is open to intermittent traffic after a tractor trailor carrying explosives was involved in a collision yesterday. OPP are on the scene directing traffic.
Major highways are mostly bare and dry. There is some partial snow pack in the Wawa district. Highways 101 and 129 in the Chapleau area continue to have some snow cover.
