A Winnipeg city councillor is demanding the federal government modernize rail safety rules.
Dan Vandal will table a motion at Wednesday's council meeting asking the federal government to inform municipalities about what types of goods are being shipped through.
This comes after the devastating explosion in Lac-Mégantic, Que. last summer.
Vandal said it's time for Ottawa and Transport Canada to "review their rules around rail transportation and make sure that they're modernized to reflect the new realities in rail transportation specifically of dangerous goods."
Vandal says his motion supports a similar motion from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
