The province will hold an inquest into the shooting death of Steve Mesic.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mesic’s death, and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The 45-year-old Hamilton man was shot and killed by Hamilton Police Service officers on June 7. The Special Investigations Unit found no wrongdoing on the part of the officers, but Mesic’s family has been vocal in its search for answers.

The inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. Dr. Jack Stanborough, regional coroner, will preside. Graeme Leach will be counsel to the coroner.

This will be the second inquest related to police use of force in Hamilton this year. In June, Stanborough presided over an inquest into the death of Phonesay Chanthachack, who was shot and killed by an officer while attempting to leave a Albright Road parking lot in a stolen van.

No date and location has been set. William Lucas, deputy chief coroner for inquests, announced the inquest on Tuesday.
