Two women were found lying in the street near the 100 block of Chaparral Valley Drive S.E.
Carmel Christians, 55, died at the scene. She is described as the estranged wife of the suspect.
Another woman was taken to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.
James Christians is wanted on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon in connection with the incident.
He is described as five feet nine inches tall, weighing 250 pounds, with salt and pepper-coloured hair and blue eyes.
He drives a grey 2013 GMC pickup truck with Alberta plate JRA 305.
The police service had been involved with the couple on a previous occasion, officials confirmed. A protection order was put in place last month after Christians was charged with assaulting his estranged wife.
He was released two days later on bail.
"Not only was an emergency protection order put in place but there were also conditions put in place because of the criminal charges," said Ryan Ayliffe with the domestic conflict unit.
Neighbours said the woman who was killed was staying with her friend.
“She left her husband, from what we’re told,” said neighbour Pierre Pronovost.
