The Canadian Alliance's only breakthroughs east of Manitoba came in Eastern Ontario.
Scott Reid, Alliance candidate in Lanark-Carleton, and Cheryl Gallant, the party's candidate in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, emerged victorious in the federal election on Monday night.
The Alliance's Gord Brown came close to a win in Leeds-Grenville, losing in a tight race to Liberal incumbent Joe Jordan.
In Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Alliance candidate Cheryl Gallant says rural voters chose her because they're angry about agriculture, gun control, and a stagnant local economy.
"Just as much as they enjoy and are looking forward to the Canadian Alliance policies, they were really voting the Liberals out," says Gallant.
It's the first time the Liberal party has been defeated in the riding since the 1930s.
In Lanark-Carleton, Reid praised his opponents in his victory speech.
"This was a dirty campaign at the national level in many ways, but not in this riding," said Reid.
"It was a really clean campaign. We were up against people who campaigned in a respectable, respectful, responsible manner. And I really appreciated that from all of them. Particularly, I want to thank and express my respect for Ian Murray."
Both Lanark-Carleton and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke were among those ridings the Alliance considered winnable in the key electoral battleground of Ontario.
But the Alliance was unable to win any other seats in the province, a major disappointment considering leader Stockwell Day had predicted the party could capture as many as 40 seats in Ontario.
The Canadian Alliance finished second in eight of Eastern Ontario's 12 ridings.
