Inquest begins into shooting of teen

A man who was at the scene when a Regina police officer shot a teenager last summer testified at a coroner's inquest Monday afternoon.
Josh Engdahl, 16, was shot during a confrontation with police officers in a residential area in Regina's north end on Sept. 10.
Willian Costea was driving along the street when the shooting happened. He told the hearing that he saw several officers surrounding Josh Engdahl on the street. He said when the boy pulled a knife, the officers began backing away. He said one officer and Josh stopped moving.
Costea says the officer pulled his gun and he heard two shots.
The officer who shot Engdahl is expected to testify Tuesday.
A coroners inquest cannot assign blame, but can make recommendations to prevent future incidents.
