Beaconsfield is among the most crowded mayoralty races on Montreal's West Island, with four people in the running to replace David Pollock, who has decided not to seek a second term in office.

Rhonda Massad is the only council veteran, with a four-year term behind her, running on a promise to improve communication and transparency.

Her rival George Bourelle wants to reduce the city's high residential property taxes.

The retired businessman says "the burden is on the taxpayers to pay for the facilities, for the infrastructure, for the services. So it's very important that we manage tightly our budget."

Candidate Hela Labene said it's simply a matter of poring over the books, to find out where money can be saved.

"We collected $43 million. We need to find out what's going on inside," Labene said.

A fourth candidate, James Bonnelle, was not available for comment.
