Winnipeg will soon have a new polar bear at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

The zoo is taking in a three-year-old bear that attacked a man in Churchill earlier this month. The man was not seriously injured.

After the incident conservation officials deemed the bear not fit for the wild. They decided instead of putting the animal down, it would be relocated to the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at Winnipeg's zoo.

"We will work with him in the coming months and eventually he will be on display in the Journey to Churchill exhibit when it opens," said Don Peterkin, the chief operating officer of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

Currently the bear is in the care of Manitoba Conservation in Churchill. He is expected to arrive in Winnipeg in a few weeks.

"He can be a tremendous ambassador for climate change, for things that are happening in the north," said Peterkin.

"Also a great opportunity to talk about how people and bears have to cohabitate​ in Churchill and live with each other and close to each other," he said.

In January of this year the zoo brought in another young polar bear that was born in captivity. Hudson, is now comfortable in his new home and has been working with trainers.
