A man is recovering in hospital after a steel beam fell on him while he was working at a Dalhousie construction site on Monday morning, according to the Nova Scotia Department of Labour.

He was rushed to hospital and Halifax police called in the Nova Scotia Department of Labour to investigate.

Const. Pierre Bourdages said the victim was conscious and breathing when he was transported from the scene.

"A 40-year-old employee of Economy Glass suffered non life-threatening injuries after a steel beam fell on him while he was working," said Chrissy Matheson, a spokeswoman for the Department of Labour and Advanced Education.

"There is a stop-work order in place and that stop-work order will remain in place until our officers are convinced that work can continue in a safe manner."

The man was working on one of the school's buildings on Lemarchant Street.

Dalhousie tweeted that they are co-operating in the investigation.
