End of an era as TAGS program folds

One of Canada's most expensive and controversial industry bailouts has ended. The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy was set up five years ago to help laid off East Coast fisheries workers.
About 25,000 people are waiting to hear the details of a $790 million program that will replace TAGS.
TAGS and the compensation package that preceded it poured roughly $2 billion into Newfoundland. The federal program paid fishers and fish plant workers who were left jobless by the collapse of the east coast cod fishery.
The replacement program will include lump sum payments, buyouts and community development funds. The government says the new program will help Newfoundland build for the future, one that's less reliant on the fishing industry.
This week a recruiting company from Ontario visited Newfoundland, looking for people who are willing to move to the mainland for job opportunities.
