One city councillor is fed up with a giant art installation in Winnipeg's Exchange District.
The Cube, a giant metal stage with a retractable curtain in Old Market Square, is riddled with problems according to Coun. Mike Pagtakhan.
"There are things with respect to the actual screen and the curtain, the opening, whether or not there’s sufficient horsepower, and you know, I’ve heard some... issues with rivets popping," said Pagtakhan.
"I’m at the end of my patience."
He has requested a detailed report on all of its problems and who will fix them.
Pagtakhan said he likes the innovative architecture but said it needs a lot of work to maintain.
The stage won a prestigious architecture award in 2011(external link) but had issues with its rivets that year.
Winches were installed but didn’t solve the problem of stress on the rivets that hold the stage’s giant metal curtain.
The stage had to be shut prematurely in 2012 after rivets began to pop, making it too dangerous to operate.(external link)
The report is expected to be complete next month.
