A local economic development agency in Cape Breton is the new owner of the former Holy Angels High School in Sydney.
New Dawn Enterprises bought the former all-girls Catholic school, convent and the more than one-hectare of land in the community's north end.
Rankin MacSween, president of New Dawn Enterprises, said his company will consult with the community on what to do with the property.
MacSween said there are any number of possibilities, such as creating an arts center, offices, classrooms, a grocery, or affordable housing.
Holy Angels was established in 1885. The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board ran the school, but the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame owned the property.
The community tried to save the school after the nuns announced they were selling the building. A Sydney businessman offered to buy the school in 2011 and lease it back to the board, but that deal fell through(external link).
