Halifax’s statue of Edward Cornwallis was spray-painted Wednesday night with comments linked to his controversial past.
The word "fake" in large red letters was sprayed across the base of the statue. Other comments were painted over the memorial plaque.
Police were notified about the vandalism early Thursday morning.
Cornwallis is the subject of a new book which outlines how the founder of Halifax led a violent campaign against the Mi'kmaq people.
