Calgary Zoo will ship its four elephants out to more southern climates next spring
Calgary's decision to relocate its four elephants will not change Edmonton's plan for their lone elephant Lucy.
By next spring, Lucy will be the only elephant left in the province — and one of the most northern elephants in the world.
Calgary Zoo officials said the decision to move the animals was made last April because the island that houses the zoo cannot accommodate a large herd, and elephant welfare is better served by being part of a larger social group.
Lucy’s caregivers say moving her would be too dangerous, but as CBC’s Tashauna Reid reports, the decision to keep her here remains controversial.
