A 26-year-old Calgary woman was crowned the new Miss Universe Canada after a mix-up saw another contestant crowned in her place last week.
Riza Santos was originally named as the first runner-up to Denise Garrido. However, judges quickly realized that an error in calculating the two competitors' scores was responsible for Garrido being mistakenly crowned.
"It's very humbling to find out that I actually won, because I thought I had lost," said Santos.
She received her crown at a ceremony in Calgary's Osteria de Medici restaurant Saturday afternoon surrounded by family and friends.
"It's just mind boggling that everybody's here to support," Santos said. "I don't even know what to say, I'm really grateful."
But Santos wasn't the only one grateful for the win.
After years of support and encouragement, the moment also had a special effect on her parents.
"I wish I could freeze the moment," said Santos's mother Dina.
"It's so good."
