Controversial Tory MLA Carl Benito lost his party's nomination in Edmonton-Mill Woods Tuesday night.
Instead the vote went to businessman Sohail Quadri on the second ballot.
Quadri immigrated to Canada from Pakistan and is an active volunteer in the community.
Benito has made a few headlines throughout his term in office.
Questions were raised about his ethics when he failed to pay property taxes on time and then blamed his wife for the oversight.
Benito paid the amount, said to be around $8,000 on four properties, in November 2010 after the province's ethics commissioner made the overdue taxes public in a report.
Benito said after he was elected, his wife agreed to take over the job of paying the couple's bills.
When he was first elected in 2008, Benito promised to give his salary to charity, but later reneged, saying he only meant to donate a portion of it.
