Three British Columbia writers are finalists for the Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers, a literary award designed to highlight promising young talent.
The award alternates between poetry and fiction, with this year's competition open to poets under the age of 35.
Each submitted an unpublished collection of poetry that was judged by a three-person jury without revealing the identity of the writers.
The finalists are:
- Raoul Fernandes, 32, of Vancouver for By Way of Explanation.
- Garth Martens, 28, of Victoria for Inheritance.
- Anne-Marie Turza, 34, of Victoria for The Quiet iii.
The prize winner receives $5,000 and finalists each receive $1,000. The winner is to be named on April 5 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
The prize is named for the late Bronwen Wallace, a poet and short story writer who mentored many young writers and was a creative writing teacher at St. Lawrence College and Queen's University.
