A man arrested on suspicion of being intoxicated died in custody in St. John's Thursday, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
The RNC said the death occurred between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. after police officers and paramedics were called to a fast-food restaurant in the Torbay area.
After they arrived, they took the man into custody under the Detention of Intoxicated Persons Act, which allows police to detain a person who is believed to be a danger to themselves or others.
The man was brought to the St. John's City lockup. A police news release said officials were unable to revive the man when he arrived at the lockup.
RNC and correctional officers tried to resuscitate the man with CPR until an ambulance arrived and brought him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The province's chief medical examiner is investigating the cause of death.
The man's identity has not been released. Police said they were contacting the man's family members Thursday afternoon.
