4 Asian Canadian content creators to follow

May is Asian Heritage Month and to celebrate, the @CBC social media team is focusing on narratives from different generations of Asian Canadians across the country about their authentic experiences and personal relationship with their heritage. 

This year, we asked Asian content creators about the types of stories they like to produce and what it means to be "Asian enough." Their thoughts are below! Meet even more talented and thoughtful Asian Canadians by following us on Instagram and TikTok.

Felisha Liu | @feliidaze

Felisha Liu (@feliidaze) is a social media content creator, daily vlogger, and works in children's TV programming.

In Felisha Liu's Asian Heritage Month TikTok video, she talks about her career in children's television and making space for herself and her community. "You have to make a push for diverse casting, hire people of colour and call people out when they are relying on harmful stereotypes in scripts, wardrobe, etc."

What type of content do you create?
My favourite content to create are vlogs. I think of the vlogs as little video diaries I can always look back on — kind of like a digital memoir for once I get older. I've always loved photography and videography and so naturally, I'd already have the footage! It's the most organic way for me to connect with not just my followers but also my friends and family who also take a look at the vlogs as little recaps. I'd love to focus on travel vlogs soon and bring everyone on my adventures! 

Uytae Lee | @uytaelee

Uytae Lee (@uytaelee) is a filmmaker who produces videos that educate and engage the public on urban planning issues. He's the creator of the CBC series Stories About Here, where he explores topics such as underground streams, zoning reform, public washrooms, street food and more.

In Uytae Lee's Asian Heritage Month TikTok video, he says: "There is one thing that I do feel really strongly about being Asian, and that is the importance of standing up for others, fighting the systemic issues that oppress and exclude marginalized people throughout our country."

What type of content do you create?
I really enjoy making videos on urban planning issues (like zoning bylaws, public transit, sewage systems, etc) — I like to describe them as the stories you find outside your doorstep. I find that most people can relate to these issues in a very tangible way so it feels really meaningful to cover them.

Andrew Gunadie | @gunnarolla

Andrew Gunadie (he/him), aka gunnarolla, is an on-camera host and video producer who travels the world, and the founder of content studio Gunnarolla Inc. He has been producing digital content and shows for over a decade.

In Andrew Gunadie's Asian Heritage Month video, he talks about growing up as one of the only Asian kids in his class, but not being immersed in Asian culture or language, and how the internet helped him feel a sense of belonging and connection to other Asian creators and viewers.

What type of content do you like to make?
I'm focused on food and travel stories.

Bom Bae | @bom.bae

Bombae is a Queen from Canada's Drag Race season 3. Originally from Mumbai India, Bombae likes to focus on doing full glam editorial shoots for social media, and creating TikTok content based around drag and comedy skits while staying up to date on the current trends. With a strong presence through TV and editorial shoots, she is quickly growing her social media presence in the Canadian sector.

In Bom Bae's Asian Heritage Month Video, she invites us to celebrate her Asian Heritage by paying homage to Indian jewelry.  In the video she goes on to say: "You may have grown up away from your homeland, but you're still connected to your culture and to your people. And that connection is not so easily broken."

What type of content do you like to make?
I like making content that shows the human side behind the drag queen. Being a drag queen Is an incredible privilege and I like making content that shows people how magical my life is.
