Erik Guay 9th in World Cup downhill training
Fellow Canadians Dixon, Hudek place 14th, 21st in Bormio, Italy
Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was the top Canadian in the opening training session Tuesday for the World Cup downhill, finishing ninth on the Stelvio course in Bormio, Italy.
Guay clocked two minutes 2.63 seconds while Italian duo Matteo Marsaglia and Peter Fill placed 1-2. Marsaglia stopped the clock in 2:01.49, with Fill 0.07 seconds behind and Patrick Kueng of Switzerland third, 0.14 back.
Stephan Keppler of Germany had clocked the fastest time but he missed a gate.
Robbie Dixon of Whistler, B.C., was 14th in 2:03.11. Calgary's Jan Hudek was 21st with a time of 2:03.26.
The start of the session was delayed for 90 minutes while organizers shaved down the San Pietro jump, which in previous years launched skiers into the air for more than 50 metres.
Super-G world champion Christof Innerhofer of Italy, who won this race three years ago, did not start as he recovers from the flu.
Another training session is scheduled for Wednesday, with the race Thursday.
