Sprinter Rodgers out of worlds after drug probe

Former U.S. sprint champion Michael Rodgers has accepted a provisional doping suspension and will not compete at world championships later this month.

Rodgers, the 2009 champion in the 100 metres, tested positive for a banned stimulant he says he ingested by accident.

According to a news release sent by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Friday, Rodgers maintains his innocence but decided to withdraw so other athletes would not be "distracted" by his positive test. Rodgers' attorney, David Greifinger, told USADA he would continue to investigate the cause of Rodger's positive and will decide how to proceed.

Rodgers was scheduled to compete in the 100 metres and also contend for a spot on the U.S. 400-metre relay team. He is one of a number of former champions who won't be on this year's world team.

Earlier this month, 2004 Olympic gold medallist Jeremy Wariner withdrew with a torn ligament in his left foot. Tyson Gay, the 2007 world champion, didn't qualify after reinjuring his hip.

Taking Rodgers' spot at worlds is Trell Kimmons, who finished fourth in the 100 at nationals earlier this summer.

"We are glad Michael has chosen to accept this provisional suspension, which will lessen the amount of disruption to his teammates as they prepare for the World Championships," USA Track and Field Interim CEO Mike McNees said.
