Canada's women's eight rowing crew captures silver in Switzerland
3 members of the crew won gold in the event at Tokyo 2020
Canada's women's eight rowing team will be bringing home medals from the final World Rowing event of the season, in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Sunday.
The Canadian team of Cassidy Deane, Morgan Rosts, Sydney Payne, Alexis Cronk, Kirsten Edwards, Jessica Sevick, Gabrielle Smith, Avalon Wasteneys, and coxswain Kristen Kit finished second in the 'A' final. The Canadian crew completed the race in a time of six minutes, 8.09 seconds.
The Canadians' time was one-tenth of a second faster than Romania, who took bronze.
Australia won the final in a time of 6:06.51.
Following a sixth-place finish in the women's double sculls at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Smith and Sevick moved into the sweep program and the eight.
"It's a different challenge trying to execute with nine people rather than two but it's been super fun to learn from the other women and thrive off the different strengths in the boat," Smith said in a release. "The willingness within this crew to learn, be open-minded, and adapt together is our biggest strength."
"We have a young group this year, [the] last few weeks have been bumpy because of Covid, but we managed to build a solid boat speed after the first 1,000 meters, [and] managed to stay efficient in the last quarter of the race."
