Leafs coach Wilson tweets contract extension

It looks like Ron Wilson got the Christmas gift he wanted.

The Toronto Maple Leafs head coach tweeted on Sunday he had received a contract extension from the team, just two days after using the social media platform to ask for one.

"'He came! He came!' Remember saying that as a little kid? Well he did: I got a new Red Ryder BB gun and a contract extension!," he tweeted.

Leafs GM Brian Burke confirmed the extension on his own twitter account later on Sunday evening.

"Congratulations to Ron Wilson on his contract extension! Merry Christmas Ron!" he tweeted.

Wilson's announcement comes amid speculation the Maple Leafs' bench boss was looking for an extension, after tweeting this on Friday: "This Xmas could be better if Santa stuffs a certain piece of paper in my stocking."

No formal statement has been issued by the organization to confirm or deny the deal.

Wilson is in the middle of the last of a four-year deal and has Toronto (18-13-4, 40 points) sitting in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

While with the Maple Leafs, Wilson has compiled a 119-120-42 record with the team missing the playoffs in each of the 56-year-old's first three years behind the bench.

The Windsor, Ont. native began his NHL coaching career with the Washington Capitals in 1997-98, spending five years with the club, and moved on to the San Jose Sharks in the 2002-03 campaign, joining the Leafs in 2008 after five seasons with the Sharks.
