Langkow, Conroy among Flames re-signed

The Calgary Flames announced on Friday that four players have been re-signed for 2008-09, including veteran centres Daymond Langkow and Craig Conroy.

Langkow finished second to captain Jarome Iginla in goals the past season and third on the team in points. He finished with 35 goals and 30 assists in 80 games in his third full season with Calgary.

Also re-signed was gritty Craig Conroy, who completed the first season of his second stint with the Flames. Conroy scored 12 goals, four of them game winners, to go along with 22 assists.

"Conroy and Langkow are two of our top centremen who are strong role models for our team both on and off the ice" Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said in a statement.

"Especially with more young wingers in our lineup next season, their experience and leadership will be important. We are happy to be able to make it work by fitting them into our salary structure."

Eric Nystrom will be brought back after getting his first extended exposure in the NHL. The son of former New York Islander Bob Nystrom had three goals and seven assists in 44 games while providing toughness.

Goaltender Curtis McElhinney also agreed to terms. McElhinney played his first five NHL games as Miikka Kiprusoff's backup, recording a 2.00 goals-against average, before the club signed veteran Curtis Joseph.

Terms of the four deals were not released.

The club is also reportedly bringing back defenceman Mark Giordano. The Toronto native impressed in his rookie campaign in 2006-07, but couldn't get Sutter to agree to a one-way contract last season, opting to play in Russia.

Because he's a free agent, Giordano can't be officially signed until after July 1.

Calgary cleared some salaries on Thursday by letting go veterans Rhett Warrener, Anders Eriksson and Marcus Nilson.
