Cujo set to retire from NHL

Former Maple Leafs goalie Curtis Joseph will officially say goodbye to the NHL on Tuesday afternoon at Toronto's Air Canada Centre, Hockey Night in Canada announced Saturday.

The 42-year-old served as Vesa Toskala's backup last season, but parted ways with the Maple Leafs after they elected to sign 25-year-old Jonas Gustavsson of Sweden.

With 454 wins, Joseph leaves the game fourth all-time by a goaltender, trailing only Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy and Ed Belfour, another one-time Maple Leaf.

Joseph appeared in 958 regular-season contests and another 133 in the playoffs over 19 seasons with six teams: St. Louis, Edmonton, Detroit, Phoenix, Calgary and Toronto.

Joseph reached the conference finals in 1999 and 2002 with the Maple Leafs.

The Keswick, Ont., native was a workhorse in net for Toronto between 1998 and 2002, posting 17 shutouts in 249 games.

Joseph was out of work at the beginning of the 2007-08 season after playing for Canada at the Spengler Cup. An unrestricted free agent, he signed midway through the campaign with Calgary.

Joseph broke into the NHL with St. Louis in 1989-90, winning nine games in 15 starts with a 3.38 goals-against average — third-highest in his career — and .890 save percentage.
